A retaining wall done wrong costs twice. We build sandstone, concrete sleeper, besser and sculpted rock walls engineered to hold decades of load — with the drainage, ag-line and footing detail that determines whether a wall lasts thirty years or fails in five.

Real reviews from real projects across the Northern Beaches, North Shore & wider Sydney.
We would like to thank you for the work you undertook at our place. You were well organised and professional. You scoped the project closely and estimated the work involved with accuracy. Your team demonstrated close attention to detail and acted at all times with consideration and courtesy. We are very pleased with the end result and would not hesitate to recommend Podology.
Friendly, flexible and creative landscapers who produced a wonderful garden for us. The team’s structural work is where their real expertise shows — everything is properly engineered and built to last.
Podology offered great advice in the planning stage and on the job were efficient, timely and delivered a quality product. The retaining wall and deck work is exceptional — you can see the engineering-first approach in every detail.
Nick and the team turned a sloped, unusable backyard into a proper structural build — retaining walls, integrated deck, planting. Every stage on time, on budget, and the finish is furniture-grade. This is what proper structural landscaping looks like.
We interviewed three landscapers. Podology were the only ones who talked about drainage, ag-lines, engineering sign-off, and long-term stability before they talked about aesthetics. That’s why we chose them — and why we’d choose them again.
Detailed quote, honest timeline, and everything delivered exactly as promised. No variation claims, no surprises. The wall has been in for two years now — zero movement, perfect drainage. Cannot recommend Podology highly enough.
Every wall is designed around your property’s terrain, soil, drainage and aesthetic. We assess the site before a single quote is written.
Local Sydney sandstone, hand-selected and dressed. Timeless, structural, and quintessential Northern Beaches character — engineered footings, proper drainage.
Engineered concrete sleeper walls for heavy-load structural retention. Often lower cost than natural stone with equivalent structural performance.
Reinforced besser block for boundary retention, cut-and-fill, and heavy-load applications. The workhorse of structural retaining.
Natural boulder walls for organic terraces, feature landscaping, and sites where the wall is part of the garden design.
Northern Beaches sites often have significant elevation change. We stabilise the terrain while maximising usable outdoor space.
Ag-line, weep holes, geofabric backfill, engineered footings sized to soil and load. This is where cheap walls fail — and where we don’t cut corners.
Poor drainage, wrong material, inadequate footing — a cheap wall fails. We engineer walls to the specific site conditions of your property. That’s what makes them last.
Detailed scope before we start. What you’re quoted is what you pay. No variation claims mid-build. Written in the quote — before we lift a shovel.
We schedule properly and keep you updated throughout. No disappearing acts, no month-long silences. Weekly progress on the tools, always.
Liz and Nick are on every project from site assessment to final inspection. Same expert, start to finish. Not a rotating labour hire crew.
Full public liability, workers compensation, engineer sign-off on every wall over 600mm. You’re covered — unlike unlicensed operators.
Reviews consistently name attention to detail, honesty on scope, and quality of finish. The proof is in decade-old walls that haven’t budged.
Liz or Nick will come to site, assess soil, terrain and drainage requirements, and recommend the right build — before you commit to anything.
Five clear stages — no guessing, no delays, no surprises.
Talk through what you want, the site conditions, and rough scope.
We come out. Assess soil, load, drainage, boundary, engineering needs.
Structural drawings and a fixed-price quote in writing. DA/CDC managed by us.
Excavation, footings, drainage, wall — sequenced by our in-house crew.
Engineer sign-off, final photos, written maintenance guide.

Nick runs the crew and the tools. Every Podology wall is built under his direct supervision on the ground.
Every wall is site-specific — height, length, material, drainage complexity and access all change the price. Most of our retaining projects are $50k+ once engineering and certification are factored in. We give you a fixed price after seeing the site.
In NSW, retaining walls over 600mm generally need engineering certification. Depending on location and boundary distance, they may need CDC or DA approval. We handle the entire compliance pathway for you.
Depends on the site, the load, the aesthetic you want, and your budget. Sandstone is beautiful and structural but more expensive. Concrete sleeper is cost-effective and heavy-duty. Besser is the workhorse for boundary retention. We recommend the right one on the site visit.
Always. Every wall includes ag-line drainage, weep holes, and geofabric backfill as standard — it’s the single most important thing determining wall longevity. Cheap builds skip this. We never do.
Yes. If you’re extending or matching a heritage sandstone wall, or replicating a neighbouring style, we source and dress stone to blend seamlessly.
Depends on size, access, and material. Most residential walls are on site 2–6 weeks. Structural or multi-terrace walls run longer. Timeline is in the quote before we start.
Tell us about your site — Liz or Nick will call you back within one business day, book a scope visit, and come back to you with a fixed quote.
Any retaining wall over 600mm high in NSW generally needs council approval or a Complying Development Certificate. Walls under 600mm may be exempt but still need to comply with the BCA. Walls near boundaries, near pools, or on sloped sites often need engineering certification regardless of height. We manage the full approval process end to end.
Sandstone (dressed or dry-stack) offers a natural, high-end look and lasts 50+ years; premium price. Timber sleeper walls are the cheapest option and last 15 to 25 years depending on treatment. Structural block walls (Besser or engineered concrete) suit heavier loads and higher walls, with strong performance up to and beyond 2 metres. The right choice depends on wall height, load, and finish.
As a Northern Beaches guide: timber sleeper walls run $250 to $450 per lineal metre installed. Sandstone walls run $600 to $1200 per lineal metre. Structural block walls run $500 to $900 per lineal metre. Prices climb with wall height, footing depth, drainage complexity, and site access. Every quote we send is fixed.
For most residential walls up to 1.5 metres, footings need to be at least 400 to 600mm deep on stable ground, deeper on reactive clay or sloped sites. Walls over 1 metre almost always need engineered footings with reo bar and concrete. We size every footing to the wall load and soil conditions on the specific site.
Depends on materials: sandstone walls comfortably last 50+ years. Structural block walls last 40 to 60 years. Treated timber sleepers last 15 to 25 years. The single biggest factor in longevity is drainage — walls that fail early almost always fail because of trapped water, which is why we engineer drainage into every job.
Yes. Sloped, tight-access, and coastal-cliff sites are common on the Northern Beaches and we build on them regularly. Difficult sites usually need engineered footings, terracing, or benching, and sometimes crane access. We do the site inspection first, then quote the full job fixed-price with any access or engineering costs included.
