Green Walls and Vertical Gardens Across the Northern Beaches

A well-built green wall does something no other landscape element does. It puts a wall of living plants at eye level, in spaces where there is no ground to plant into, and holds that planting healthy for years with the right structure behind it. Podology designs and installs vertical gardens and living walls across the Northern Beaches, indoors and out, from a single feature panel in an entry courtyard through to full multi-storey exterior installations, always built around a proper irrigation and drainage system rather than a planter box hoping for the best.

What we install

Green wall projects on the Northern Beaches typically fall into a few clear briefs. Outdoor privacy and screening walls, usually along a boundary or against a neighbouring building, where a run of dense green replaces a fence or softens rendered blockwork. Feature walls in courtyards and entry zones, where a single planted panel becomes the focal point of the space. Indoor living walls in double-height voids, stairwells and commercial receptions, planted with species chosen for lower light and stable indoor conditions. And climber-trained walls built around stainless cable systems, where the long-term look is a mature ficus, star jasmine or Boston ivy holding a full elevation.

Green walls almost always sit inside a larger landscape scheme. We tie them into deck areas, planted beds and hardscape, so the wall reads as a considered part of the yard rather than a bolt-on.

Systems and planting

The system behind a green wall is what decides whether it thrives or slowly browns out. There are a few genuinely different approaches we specify depending on the site.

Modular panel systems use interlocking planted panels fixed to a structural frame with an integrated drip line and drainage channel. They are quick to install, easy to swap out panel by panel if a section fails, and the go-to for most indoor and small-to-mid outdoor installations.

Felt pocket systems are lighter, thinner in profile, and suit internal walls where structural loading is a limit. They rely on continuous irrigation and root through a fibrous mat rather than into soil.

Trellis and cable-trained climbers are the long-play option. A stainless steel cable grid fixed off the wall face, planted at the base with the right climber, delivers a full green wall in two to three years at a fraction of the structural cost.

Planting palettes shift by location. Outdoor Northern Beaches walls lean on hardy coastal species: dwarf westringia, coastal rosemary, dianella, lomandra, philodendron xanadu and native violets. Indoor walls run to pothos, philodendron, monstera minima, peperomia and spathiphyllum. Every wall we install ships with an automated irrigation controller and a proper drainage catch.

The Podology approach

Green walls fail for two reasons. The system was undercooked, or the aftercare was left to the client with no plan. We handle both. Every green wall we install is specified with the right substructure, waterproofing behind the panels, controlled irrigation with a solenoid and moisture sensing, and a drainage path to somewhere it will actually go, not the closest garden bed.

The install itself runs the same way every Podology project does. Fixed written quote up front. One point of contact. A project-managed team of subcontractors we have used for years, coordinated in the right sequence. And a walk-through at handover covering irrigation timing, feeding schedule, likely first-year issues, and either a maintenance plan we deliver or a clean handover to a maintenance gardener.

Pricing is driven by wall area, system, planting density and access. Most residential green wall installs on the Northern Beaches sit in the $12k to $35k range, with larger commercial or double-height walls priced individually.

What to expect

A site visit comes first, always. We look at the wall, orientation, sun exposure, existing services, water access and where drainage can honestly go. From there we recommend a system and planting palette suited to the location and put a fixed quote in writing.

Install time is short compared with a hardscape build. Most residential green walls are on the wall inside one to two weeks once the substructure and irrigation are in. Larger installs coordinated with a broader build fold into that program.
