Pool Landscaping Across Sydney’s Northern Beaches

The pool is the easy part. The landscape around it, the surround, the coping, the shade structure, the planting, the safety fencing that has to be there without ruining the view, is where most Northern Beaches pool projects either come together or fall apart. What we build around pools

Pool landscaping is the umbrella term for a stack of related work that usually needs to happen at the same time. Pool surrounds and coping, in stone, tile, timber or a combination. Alfresco zones running off the pool edge, with a paved or decked floor and some form of shade. Planting schemes tuned for pool proximity, low leaf drop, salt-tolerance where the pool sits close to the ocean, and colour that reads well against the water. Where a project involves level changes, we also handle the retaining and structural work needed to make the pool zone flat, safe and drained properly.

Materials and options

Material selection around a pool is not just a look choice, it is a safety and durability choice. The surface has to stay cool underfoot in Sydney summer, it has to provide grip when wet, it cannot fail from chlorine or saltwater exposure, and it has to shrug off ten years of leaf tannin and sunscreen.

Travertine is the most popular pool surround stone we specify. Unfilled and tumbled, it stays cool, drains fast through its natural pitting, and pairs well with almost every architectural style on the Northern Beaches. Bullnose travertine coping ties the edge of the pool cleanly.

Sandstone is the local classic, particularly around older harbour and coastal homes. Sawn or exfoliated finish sandstone gives grip and reads as in-keeping with the surrounding architecture.

Bluestone and porcelain come in on more contemporary builds, honed or textured for slip resistance, particularly where the client wants a darker, more architectural finish.

Hardwood decking, in spotted gum, blackbutt or a marine-grade composite, is the pick when the pool sits alongside a raised alfresco or where a warmer, softer floor is wanted underfoot. Planting palettes lean toward frangipani, strelitzia, agave, dietes, gardenia, and grasses that hold shape without heavy leaf drop into the water.

What to expect

We start with a site visit that ideally involves the pool builder as well if the pool has not yet been built. We work through levels, orientation, sight lines from the house, fencing compliance and how the client actually intends to use the space. A fixed quote follows in writing, with clear scope for each trade.

On site, a full pool landscape build runs anywhere from six weeks for a coping and surround refresh on an existing pool through to sixteen weeks or more for a full backyard rebuild coordinated with a new pool shell. Handover includes maintenance guidance for stone, timber and planting.
