Stonework Across Sydney’s Northern Beaches

Stonework is the part of a Northern Beaches build that lifts a good yard into a memorable one. It is also the part that punishes shortcuts. A wall that reads as effortless from the street took someone a week of careful selection, cutting and stacking to get there. Podology designs and builds sandstone dry-stack walls, dressed stone feature walls, natural stone cladding and full stone landscape elements across Manly, Mosman and the entire Northern Beaches, working almost exclusively in materials that will still look right in twenty years.

What we build in stone

The stonework we take on breaks down into a few consistent categories. Dry-stack sandstone walls, low and tall, freestanding and retaining, where the appeal is the irregular face and the honest weight of the material. Dressed stone feature walls in sandstone or limestone, cut square and coursed, used as an entry statement or a backdrop to a pool. Natural stone cladding fixed to a structural blockwork or rendered core, which lets us apply the look of solid stone to walls, chimneys and pool fronts without the footing cost of full sections. And smaller elements like stone steps, sandstone edging, feature boulders and entry piers.

Stone often sits alongside the harder-working parts of a build, tying into structural retaining, meeting a deck edge or framing a driveway pave line, and the strength of the finished job usually lives in those junctions.

Materials and options

Almost every Northern Beaches stone job we do is built around one or more of a few core materials, chosen for how they wear, weigh and read on site.

Sydney sandstone is the default and the best-suited stone on the peninsula. Locally quarried, weathered gold to buff in colour, it can be used as random rubble for dry-stack walls, as coursed dressed blocks for a formal look, or as thin cladding over a structural core. It ages beautifully in coastal air.

Dressed limestone and reconstituted stone give a whiter, cleaner aesthetic where a modern build calls for it, cut in tight courses with narrow joints for a considered contemporary look.

Granite and basalt come in for feature elements, boulder placements and steps where a darker, denser stone is the right visual weight against the rest of the palette.

Natural stone veneer is the workhorse for cladding. Real stone, cut thin and pinned or fixed to a structural wall, delivering the material honesty of solid stone without the substructure cost. Done well it is indistinguishable from a full-thickness wall once pointed up. Done badly the joints give it away, which is why the stonemasons we work with are the ones we go back to job after job.

Stonework prices sit above other landscape trades because the material and the craft both cost. Most residential stone projects on the Northern Beaches fall in the $20k to $80k range, with larger dry-stack retaining runs and full feature elevations sitting at the higher end.

What to expect

We start with a site visit to look at the space, the surrounding architecture and the stone that already exists on the property (there is often more usable material on site than a client realises). From there we work up a fixed quote covering the stone type, profile, joint style and finish, along with any associated groundworks.

Build time depends heavily on scope. A single feature wall or entry pier might run two to three weeks. A larger dry-stack retaining run through a sloped block, coordinated with drainage and planting, can sit at six to ten weeks on site.
