Structural landscaping is the honest name for the biggest jobs we take on. Full backyard rebuilds where the site needs to be re-levelled, retained, drained, paved, decked and planted as one coordinated piece of work, often on a sloped or difficult Northern Beaches block. It is the kind of build where the drawings need engineering, the trades need sequencing across months rather than weeks, and the client needs one person who owns the outcome from the first site visit to the final handover. Podology plans, quotes and runs structural landscape builds across Manly, Mosman, the peninsula and every suburb between.
These are the projects that combine most or all of the trades we work with into one program. Site cut, excavation and bulk earthworks. Structural retaining walls in concrete, blockwork, sandstone or engineered timber, often at a scale that requires engineer sign-off and council approval. Full stormwater and subsoil drainage design. Paved driveways, courtyards and paths. Hardwood or composite decking, often with structural sub-framing at height. Pool surrounds and alfresco zones. Feature stone walls, entry piers, planter boxes built into the structure. Planting, irrigation, lighting and final finishing.
Structural landscape jobs are usually the ones where a homeowner has been quoted by three separate trades who each want to own their piece, and no one is willing to own the whole. We take on the whole.
Structural landscaping is a materials-heavy discipline. The right choices are made at design stage and locked in before the excavator arrives, because most of them cannot be changed later without ripping work out.
Structural walls get built in reinforced blockwork, poured concrete, dressed sandstone, engineered hardwood sleepers or reinforced sleeper systems depending on wall height, retained load, aesthetic and cost. Anything over the height thresholds set by council goes through certified engineering.
Drainage is the invisible half of the job and the half that decides whether the build stands up in five years. Subsoil ag lines behind every retained wall, correctly sized stormwater catchment across paved and decked areas, and engineered discharge points either into the street system or onto a legal absorption trench.
Hard finishes are chosen for wear and coastal exposure: sandstone, bluestone, travertine, hardwood decking in spotted gum or blackbutt, aluminium or stainless balustrading where required. Soft finishes lean toward structural planting that gives fast screening and holds shape as the build settles: lilly pilly, magnolia little gem, dwarf westringia, agapanthus, mondo grass and structural trees where the block allows.
The reason people call us for structural landscaping is that this is the tier of build where an owner-managed job goes wrong fastest. Too many trades, too many decisions, too many overlap points, no one keeping the whole program alive. We take that off you. Every Podology structural build runs on a fixed written quote covering the entire scope, a single point of contact through design, approval and construction, and a project-managed team of licensed subcontractors we have worked with across dozens of Northern Beaches builds.
You brief us once. You approve one program. You get a coordinated build where excavation, retaining, drainage, paving, decking, stonework, planting, irrigation and lighting are all sequenced against each other, one call point when a decision needs making, and a defect period after handover to sort anything the build settles into.
Structural landscape projects sit at the top of the pricing range. Most start around $50k and run into the mid-six-figures for a full multi-level rebuild on a difficult block.
Every structural landscape build starts with a proper site visit. We walk the block, talk through how the family actually uses the space, look at existing levels, drainage and boundaries, and take enough measurements to work up a concept. Concept design and then a fixed quote follow, with any required engineering and council approval built into the program.
Build time is scope-driven. Most residential structural builds on the Northern Beaches run three to six months on site, with the design and approval stage adding one to three months before that.
If you have a full backyard build in front of you, whether the block is in Mosman, Freshwater, Avalon, Palm Beach or anywhere else on the peninsula, we would rather stand on the site than talk in the abstract. Call 02 5761 0767 or use the contact form and we will book a walk-through and put together a concept and a real quote.
