04 Aug How Much Does a Retaining Wall Cost in Sydney? (2026 Guide)
In Sydney in 2026, a residential retaining wall typically costs between $450 and $1,200 per square metre of wall face, installed. Simple timber sleeper walls under a metre high sit at the lower end, around $450 to $650 per square metre. Structural block or reinforced sandstone walls over 1.2 metres, with engineered footings and drainage, usually land between $900 and $1,400 per square metre. A full residential job on the Northern Beaches, from small garden edge to structural retaining, is commonly priced between $6,000 and $60,000 depending on length, height and access.
That range is wide because retaining walls are one of the most site-specific builds in landscaping. Three walls of the same length can cost very different amounts once you factor in soil type, slope, drainage requirements and how easy it is to get a machine to the back of the block.
What actually drives the cost
Five things move the price of a retaining wall more than anything else.
Wall height. Once a wall goes over 600mm in NSW, engineering becomes non-negotiable and costs rise sharply. Under a metre, you can often use non-structural methods. Over 1.5 metres, expect reinforced footings, engineered design, geotextile drainage and sometimes tiered construction. Every extra 300mm of height can add 20 to 30 percent to the per-metre price.
Material. Timber sleepers are the cheapest common option. Concrete block, sandstone and gabion walls sit in the middle. Cut and dressed sandstone or feature stone from a specialist quarry sits at the top. Material choice alone can double the cost of a wall.
Drainage. A retaining wall without drainage will fail. Every wall should include agricultural drainage, geotextile fabric, drainage aggregate behind the wall and weep holes or a drainage outlet. On a 15 metre run, expect drainage to add $1,500 to $4,000, depending on where the water has to be piped to.
Footings. Structural walls need engineered footings that anchor the wall against the pressure of the soil behind it. On the Northern Beaches, sandy soil often needs deeper or wider footings than clay sites in the inner west. Footings alone can be 15 to 25 percent of the wall cost.
Site access. If a machine can drive to where the wall is being built, excavation is fast. If everything has to be barrowed through a side gate, hand-dug or lifted with a crane, labour cost climbs rapidly. Poor access can add 25 to 40 percent to a job.
Cost by wall type
Timber sleeper walls (under 900mm): $450 to $650 per square metre. Good for garden beds, low retaining and level changes where structural load is minimal. Lifespan around 15 to 25 years with treated H4 hardwood.
Concrete besser block walls (rendered): $700 to $1,000 per square metre. The workhorse of Sydney retaining. Reinforced, cored, filled and rendered. Good structural performance to two metres or higher with engineering.
Sandstone walls (dry stacked or mortared): $900 to $1,400 per square metre. The classic Northern Beaches look. Cost varies with stone size, whether stone is recycled or new, and mortared versus dry stacked construction.
Gabion walls: $600 to $900 per square metre. Wire cages filled with stone. Popular for their industrial look and excellent drainage.
Cut and dressed feature stone: $1,300 to $2,200 per square metre and up. Uses stone specifically cut to size, often with feature courses or capping. See our Northern Beaches stonework page for examples.
Council approval and engineering costs
In most parts of NSW, retaining walls up to 600mm high do not require council approval, provided they are on your own land and not near a boundary. Walls over 600mm generally need engineering and either a Complying Development Certificate or a full Development Application. If your wall is close to a boundary, on a heritage-listed property or affects stormwater flow to a neighbour, approval requirements can trigger at lower heights. Add roughly $800 to $2,500 for engineering design and structural certification, and $500 to $3,000 for DA fees depending on your council.

Real Northern Beaches examples
A typical suburban front garden with 8 metres of 600mm sandstone edging on a Manly block might run $6,500 to $9,000. A rear yard structural retaining wall of 20 metres at 1.4 metres high, with drainage and a small step, on a Mosman site with tight access, might run $32,000 to $48,000. A hillside terrace across three levels in Avalon or Palm Beach, with two structural walls totalling 45 metres, can push past $85,000 once engineering, drainage and access costs are included.
How to get an accurate quote
The only way to get a real number is a site visit. Anyone pricing a retaining wall from photos alone is guessing. A proper quote should include: exact wall length and height, material specification, drainage detail, footing specification, engineering allowance, DA or CDC allowance if required, site clean-up and disposal, and a clear breakdown so you can see where the money goes.
For most Northern Beaches homeowners, a mid-range 15 to 25 metre structural retaining project sits between $18,000 and $45,000 fully installed. We often build these as part of a wider outdoor project. If you are combining a retaining wall with decking, paving or planting, integrated pricing usually beats separate trades. See our retaining walls Northern Beaches page for examples and process.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is it cheaper to build my own retaining wall?
For a small garden edge under 500mm, DIY is often viable and can save 40 to 60 percent on labour. For anything structural or over 600mm high, DIY is a false economy: engineering, drainage and correct footings all matter, and a failed retaining wall costs many times more to fix than to build correctly the first time.
How long should a retaining wall last?
A properly built structural block, sandstone or gabion wall on the Northern Beaches should last 40 to 60 years or more with minimal maintenance. Treated timber sleeper walls typically last 15 to 25 years before needing replacement. Drainage is the biggest determinant of lifespan for any wall type.
Do I need engineering for a 700mm retaining wall?
Usually yes. In NSW, walls over 600mm generally require structural engineering to satisfy council or Complying Development requirements. Even at 500 to 600mm, we recommend engineered footings if the wall is retaining anything more than garden bed soil.
How long does it take to build a retaining wall?
A small sleeper wall can go in over one to two days. A structural block or sandstone wall of 15 to 25 metres typically takes one to three weeks including excavation, footings, wall construction, drainage installation and backfill. Wet weather and delivery timing can extend this.
What is the cheapest type of retaining wall?
Timber sleeper walls are almost always the cheapest option per square metre. They suit low garden retaining where structural performance and long-term lifespan are not critical. For anything over a metre high or holding back a load, the cheapest wall is a structural one built once and built right.
